An Incredible Trip to a Truly Gentle Barn

Help me give my students an incredible experience to The Gentle Barn where they will learn about kindness to one another, animals and our planet.

My Students

Our school serves students from transitional kindergarten through 5th grade. The student body includes about 450 students altogether. The student body is widely diverse, and 55% of the students come from low-income families. Our school is a Title l school.

My fifth grade class includes 34 fabulous, inquisitive and hardworking learners.

Our classroom setting includes students with different interests, experiences, learning styles and needs. Students work together to build a unique classroom environment in which all learners have a voice that is not only heard but also highly valued.

We work together to create a comfortable school environment in which students look forward to coming each day to develop their academic and social skills. Students are supported as they push themselves academically and socially and monitor their own progress across the school year.

My Project

The Gentle Barn is an animal sanctuary that is home to horses, donkeys, cows, pigs, sheep, goats, turkeys, chickens, llamas, peacocks, emus, cats and dogs. Each animal was rescued from severe abuse and neglect and once they were rehabilitated, people have a chance to interact with them to serve as a glimmer of hope and message of resilience to others.

My 34 fifth grade students would love the opportunity to visit The Gentle Barn and to learn about not only showing kindness and compassion to animals but to one another.

This is an incredible experience that teaches us how our actions impact not only other human beings but animals and our greater environment.

The Gentle Barn is located outside of our bustling city and the setting will transport children to a serene barn where they learn more about animals and thus see the undeniable commonalities between people and animals. This will be a valuable experience in promoting empathy and building connections among members of our classroom community.

This trip will be particularly impactful for my English Language Learners as well as my students with special needs, many of whom face struggles to communicate, be heard and be understood. Animals are non-judgmental creatures, and this experience levels the playing field for everyone.

I cannot wait to take my 5th graders to the Gentle Barn! I hope you will consider funding our trip!
