This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in one of the highest poverty areas in our nation. Despite their economic hardships, my students come to school eager and ready to learn. Especially now, during this unprecedented time, I need to create a 100% equitable classroom as classrooms are the foundations of equitable societies. My students deserve a classroom where their cultural, spiritual, and/or ethnic values and practices are acknowledged, honored, and respected.
My Project
Thanks to the generosity of donors, I've created a library consisting of books at many different levels and books that represent different genres, topics, and series. Additionally, I've accumulated an assortment of beautiful culturally diverse read alouds. However, as I put the series books and leveled books into their baskets, I noticed that my students have a choice of books such as Junie B Jones, Clementine, Ramona, Cam Jansen, Mr. Putter, and Tabby, etc. I realized with disquietude that my library was lacking in series books with black characters.
My students of color and students from low-income backgrounds need and deserve access to diverse books.
The books I chose will allow my students to choose books where the hero or main character is a person of color. This is an important step in creating an equitable classroom.
