My students need a document camera to analyze any book in our library and their own writing.

My Students
Remember the old overhead projectors? Teachers would photocopy worksheets onto transparencies so they could model the work. Then, we got fancy and would scan books and magazines onto overhead transparencies. Now, there is a tool that allows a teacher to share any paper, book, or kids writing... an ELMO.
My fabulous, third grade students are highly curious and eager to learn.
If I share a website, they go home or to the library to learn more. If I share a story, they sit with ears and eyes glued on me. They are fabulous, but we have a lot to accomplish together this year with the new Common Core Standards implemented and tested.
My Project
A document camera, sometimes referred to as an Elmo, would allow my students and me to analyze a text closely. I could share the chapter book I'm reading aloud to them so they could read a page with me. With this tool, we could practice reading punctuation with fluency. They could hear why I read with the expression I'm using. We could figure out tricky words by using the context of the story around it. When we have a conversation about a character, theme, message in the story, we could look for text evidence that proves or supports their ideas. Of course when we read nonfiction, we could read all the text features including the captions and graphs closely.
This tool would also help in writing. At the end of a writing class, students could share their writing on the screen so the class community can share best writing practices.
Lastly, all worksheets in math and other subjects can be modeled in front of the whole class.
A document camera would not only be an effective teaching tool, but it would be a HUGE time saver for me as a teacher.
I would be able to spend more time with my students letting them dig into the details of the text and learning how to create and support big thinking. Curious and intelligent students, like the ones in my class this year, need direction on this. Although our classroom has a large Smartboard, the big screen could be utilized for every lesson with a document camera.
