This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Writers don't need to be given formulas; they need to be shown possibilities." - Barry Lane With a document camera, I will be able to share the possibilities modeled by famous authors as well as students in our very own classroom.

I have an ambitious group of kindergarten students this year!

If you were to walk into my room between 10:00 and 10:45, you would hear the busy hum of pens on paper, books being stapled together, and students stretching out the sounds in words and conferring with their writing partners. Writing is a favorite subject for many of my students because it gives them time to share their interests with the class. A full 59% of students at my school are from low income households while 23% are English Language Learners. My students greatly benefit from a daily writing block that allows them to express themselves through storytelling.

My Project

In the past, I have used an Elmo document camera to project books so that students can read along with me and notice intricate details in the enlarged illustrations. I have also projected my writing so that students can watch as I capitalize letters, sound out words, and include spaces between them. Unfortunately, I no longer have an Elmo provided by my school. My students need a document camera to share their learning with classmates. This year, I would like to begin giving my students the opportunity to project their own reading and writing for other students to see. At the end of writing workshop each day, we have a share time when students can share with their partners or read their work to the class. The students sitting more than a few feet away struggle to see, so it would make a world of difference to have it projected on the wall! By the end of the year, students will be able to respectfully critique the work of their classmates.

The power to share gives students a great amount of ownership over their work.

I know that my students will be inspired by their classmates' work, and they will also be thrilled to inspire others. Thank you for helping to make this dream a reality in my classroom!
