An Electrifying Ukulele!

My students need an acoustic/electric ukulele to accompany their singing, drumming, and xylophone playing in the classroom and in concerts.

My Students

My students are energetic and creative. They love coming to music class twice a week. We're a Title 1 school with many musical opportunities. We have an after school choir, an after school world music drumming ensemble, band and orchestra. Almost every grade level performs in a special concert once a year.

Music gives my students a creative outlet during their day.

They are often in the driver's seat of their class. The students decide where to take a lesson and how to improve their musicianship as individuals or as a class. They have opportunities to try new things in a supportive atmosphere and can refine their musicianship in areas they feel they are strong.

My Project

My students learn to play many different instruments during their music classes. They learn to sing songs from all over the world. Many of our musical pieces come from Will Schmid's World Music Drumming curriculum. The kids learn to sing and play music from different cultures, from African to the Caribbean and South America. While drumming plays a big role in this curriculum, singing is the heart of it all! Xylophone patterns round out the rhythmic and melodic structure of each piece.

Having an electric ukulele would mean we would finally have the harmonic progression that is missing from our singing, drumming and xylophone parts.

The electric ukulele would be loud enough to help support the singing and instrumental parts, something an acoustic ukulele is not loud enough to do. It would support the other instrumental and vocal parts of our songs, give my students the opportunity to learn to play and perform chords, and teach them what harmonic progression is through hands on learning. This instrument would be used each day for every grade level, from preschool through fifth grade. We would use it for our choir and our drum ensemble. It would be an integral part of our music classroom!
