An Educated Citizenry: Helping Students Become More Informed About Civics
My students need 25 copies each of American Political Speeches and Supreme Court Decisions to help them become more informed about American laws and politics and to help them to become more engaged in American civics.

My Students
As a teacher in a high poverty district, my students come into the classroom with many challenges. Learning reading and writing skills has been especially difficult for my students. Their access to meaningful and challenging works of literature has been limited. This is especially for works of literature dealing with American history and civics.
My students deserve to become more informed about how their country's laws work.
They deserve to understand how the principles and ideals that helped to shape those laws evolved over time. They deserve to take their place among the next generation of leaders and citizens who will shape this country's future. That journey begins through reading and learning.
My Project
These books on American civics will help my students learn about the philosophies and ideals that have helped to shape American political life. They will also help to show my students how those ideals have been translated into law (for better or worse). These texts will provide my students a window into how ideas and laws change over time as our country strives to fulfill the promise outlined in our founding documents.
More importantly, these books will aid my students to becoming more informed about how the laws of their nation are formed, how ideals change over time, and help them to understand their own vital roll in shaping their nation's future.
