This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My twenty-four energetic kindergarten students keep me working hard! I teach a full-day kinder class at a high-need school, serving students of low socio-economic backgrounds. Many are also English language learners. Despite these barriers, my students are enthusiastic and strive to do their best.
A challenge in my class is presenting instruction to linguistically and academically diverse students. To meet their needs, I differentiate my instruction during workshop time (and whenever else needed) by teaching in small groups. Students are grouped by ability levels, and the groups are rotated to various independent activities. One group is with me. I provide direct instruction that addresses a specific skill to that specific group. In this small group, students focus easily. They have less anxiety, thus they feel more comfortable asking questions and sharing ideas. This teaching style has allowed me to develop a better relationship with my students and target their academic needs.
I often use a small white board (8" X 10") to teach and model writing and problems in small group, which makes it hard for students to see. It slows down the learning process since I have to hold it up and scan it across the table. I also have to constantly write and erase given the limited space on the board. At times, I have to use multiple small boards, which hinders the flow of the lessons.
To improve my small group instruction, I am seeking a large, double-sided write and wipe / magnetic easel. One side has dashed lines. This is essential for young children. It helps them see the position of letters and words within the lines as I model manuscript writing and writing basic sentences. The size of the lines make it easy for large printing. The back side is blank, which can be used for modeling math problems, drawing pictures, brainstorming ideas, etc. The height of the easel is perfect for the little ones to come up and participate in the learning process by pointing to something on it, demonstrating how to write the alphabet letters to their peers, etc. The board is also magnetic, which allows the use of magnetic letters, numbers, and shapes. The easel is mobile, making it super functional in various locations of the classroom. Whether the board is used during instruction or independent student learning time, the easel would serve as an essential teaching resource in the classroom.
Your generous donations will enhance my class and all my future students' learning experiences. They will definitely make use of it just as I will in my instruction. My students will have fun writing, drawing, and manipulating objects on it. I deeply appreciate any donation that you can give in making this wish possible.
