Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
One of the most amazing things about our middle school is the diversity of the student population! Our school serves an impoverished rural community with high poverty and a majority of students who receive free or reduced lunch.
Even though many of our students come from challenging circumstances, they strive to excel and love to learn!
Our ELL, EC, and AIG students bring different challenges and rewards to the classroom, which makes differentiated learning pathways necessary for individual success! We use a wide variety of teaching techniques and technology applications to provide differentiation to meet the needs of EACH student, whether they are just learning English or are ready for more challenging materials.
My Project
Our last class of sixth grade students received a pair of inexpensive ear buds at the beginning of last year from a nearby university. These were organized in tubs for each group to use during class time.
Having these ear buds immediately accessible for all of our students allowed me to individualize lessons and provide differentiated instruction for all students, regardless of their proficiency level.
We have a large number of English Language Learners (ELLs) and students with learning disabilities in our diverse population. We also have students who are performing on grade level, as well as those who have mastered the current curriculum and are ready for advanced instruction and enrichment. We usually have a combination of each of these students in each class, which can be challenging at times, as I strive to meet the needs of ALL of my students.
A variety of technology applications, such as Canvas, Discovery Streaming, and Quizlet help me to provide remediation, practice, and enrichment assignments for my students. Discovery Streaming offers a wide variety of videos in different languages to help students understand concepts. When students have the opportunity to view these individually instead of in a whole class format, they can pause to take notes or repeat a section of the video for better understanding. Ear buds are a necessity when 30 students are viewing different videos and presentations.
I embed presentations, notes, and other materials in Canvas assignments for students to access in class and at home. Students can use these at their own pace and repeat exercises to help them become more proficient. I also provide extension activities for early finishers through Canvas, so advanced students have access to more rigorous materials. Providing ear buds for each student will allow me to continue differentiating for my students.
