Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A typical day in my classroom starts with us reading an inspirational quote from the book, 365 Days of Wonder by R.J. Palacio. These quotes give us the opportunity to come together as a community to look inward, discuss our dreams, and discuss life. We then begin our workshops after a moment!

Our school may just be one of the most diverse places in the world and one of the biggest schools in NYC.

Our school is just shy of 2,000 Elementary students. I like to compare our school to the United Nations because of our incredible diversity. The majority of students speak a second language and are from immigrant families. They enter our school with a rich tapestry of life experiences! They are vibrant and inquisitive. The size of our school does not hinder our sense of community. In and out of the classrooms, students and teachers alike feel like they are a part of a family. This is unusual for a school this size and yet, it speaks volumes about what our school tries to do to best meet the needs of our students. Yet, because we are a Title 1 school and because some of our students do face personal and financial hardships, we are not always able to fulfill our wishlist of things we would like to purchase and provide for our students.

My Project

I have 32 students and would first love to use two iPad's for my newcomers. These iPad's would give them the opportunity to access literacy programs in an engaging and accessible manner. I would also love to use the iPad's for my non-fiction reading and writing units. Students need to use multiple resources for these assignments and with the change in common core standards, they need to learn how to present their information in multiple contexts. Giving them the opportunity to draw research from the Internet and then make PowerPoint presentations or videos using their i-pad's would transform the way we do research! Furthermore, I would love to give students more opportunities to hone their critical thinking skills. Providing students with iPad's would develop their fluency with technology and would give them the opportunity to blend together and transfer their learning from other subjects in an interdisciplinary manner!

Donations to this project will most definitely impact and change the lives of my students!

Your donation could inspire one or more of my students to pursue a career in informational technology or engineering! These iPad's will also give students who have little to no experience with the use of computers an opportunity to learn important 21st century skills with regards to the use of technology. Your donation could give students opportunities to learn in an engaging and interdisciplinary manner!
