My Students

I serve a fun group of sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade scholars in a Title I school near Charlotte. Most of the scholars I teach come from low-income households, and over 90% receive free or reduced-price lunch but they are ready to learn each and every day. They receive government assistance and some are even homeless. They are lacking the most basic school supplies like paper and pencil. As teachers, we often provide these materials. Many times we pay for these out of our own pockets. These students come to school escaping circumstances many of us could never imagine dealing with as an adult. For many of them, school is a place of solace, a time of peace in a world of chaos.

My Project

My school district is doing 100% remote learning right now. During our live sessions, my students often say they can't hear me. I sometimes can't hear them either. The microphone and speakers on my school-issued device are not the best. We have done the best we could so far, but providing me with headphones that will cancel out the background noises will help us to better hear and connect with one another.

Teaching in a remote setting has many challenges.

We do our best to overcome these challenges as we meet them. It seems very small, but when we are physically apart with only a camera to connect us, it makes it very difficult to engage. Having adequate headphones will help me to engage and connect with my students while we are physically apart from one another.
