Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a child, I was fortunate enough to learn a lot about our world and history by traveling; unfortunately, many of the deserving students that I teach, never have the opportunity to leave their neighborhood, let alone travel to another state! I am very lucky to teach the fabulous 8th grade Class of 2010 at a Chicago Public School. The school itself serves mainly a Latino population, including general education students, special needs students and bilingual students, the majority of whom come from low-income families.
Every adult can look back fondly on their 8th grade class trip. This year our school is offering a trip to New York City! The trip proves to be an unforgettable learning experience as children will see history first hand. For instance, our 8th graders spend a lot of time in Social Studies learning about the horrors of 9/11 and are inspired by the stories of heroism that resulted following the tragedy. Imagine the impact touring Ground Zero would have for our students! Many of our students' families and friends are immigrants to the United States. Can you appreciate the value for these students seeing Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, as they see where people just like themselves entered our country and made it strong! In schools where interactions with the fine arts is limited by budget cuts, imagine the power of tours to New York's Museums, Parks, and Broadway where students learn to appreciate fine art, drama and beauty!
It will truly be a once in a lifetime experience for our students. Unfortunately, without your help, some of our deserving students will not be able to experience these wonders due to financial constraints! I am asking for donations to fund one student's participation on this trip.
You can make this trip possible for my student. She will FOREVER fondly look back on all she learned, the magnificent New York sites she has seen, the friendships she cemented on this trip, and the generous donors that made this trip possible for her! Thank you!
