Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Today's educators have an additional responsibility to get students ready for the 21st century. This task has been made more difficult by the rapid growth in technology and the slow acquisition of money for classrooms.

My students are 24 young impressionable minds.

They live only minutes away from some of the most influential minds in technology, think Steve Jobs, Apple, Yahoo, and Google. The computers in our classroom are twice as old as the first graders that walk in the door each day. Unfortunately, these same students do not have access to current technology at home as their families are just making the essential ends meet-rent, food and medical expenses. School is the place where these students are going to learn the wonderful places that technology can take them for the future, but our classroom computers are now obsolete.

My Project

A new Apple desktop computer for the students will be a welcome addition to our classroom. We have recently had a setback at our school with technology. Our students love to use the AR (Accelerated Reader) program to take reading comprehension tests. Our low socioeconomic population defies the odds by loving to read. We have students who read voraciously to earn AR points. Even first graders love to use AR. Recently, the company that runs AR has changed the way that students take tests and our classroom computers are so old that they are no longer able to access the website and thus our students CAN NOT take AR tests. Yikes! We have so much student buy in to this program we can not go backwards. Somehow, we need to bring new technology into our classrooms with no budget.

This computer will help my students be able to access Accelerated Reader and the world.

Please consider helping my students make a small step in this digital age, who knows I may have the next Apple CEO in my classroom.
