Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students need an Apple laptop computer (to replace our only Mac that broke) for creating the school newsletter, competing in an international website competition, and completing other quality design applications.
I teach applied technology to K-5th grade high-need, low-income students in a large urban public school district in New Jersey.
Our students are primarily Hispanic and include a high number of special education students. More than 85% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. We would greatly benefit from having an Apple (MAC) computer in our technology classroom since none of our other rooms have these and students would get to learn how both MAC and PC computers work.
My Project
Our students participate in an international website building competition, create a school-wide newspaper publication, and produce school videos. They conduct interviews, research, write articles, create charts and graphs, and take photographs and videos to complete these tasks. The biggest struggle for them is access to all information in one place and ability to use layout software on one computer. We had an awesome MAC computer that recently just stopped working and won't turn on. As a result of loosing the only MAC computer we had in the school, we can no longer produce our school newsletter like we used to. We also can not complete our 5th grade graduation videos or other design applications like brochures and sideshows like we did in the past. This will also make us ineligible to participate in the website building competition for which we won 2nd place a few years back while working with students from Israel and Mississippi.
This apple computer will provide our students with an understanding of the MAC operating system as opposed to just the PC/windows computers we currently have.
This will also provide our kids with opportunities to use editing and layout software as well web development software.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
