Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My kindergarten students come from a variety of different economic and ethnic backgrounds. Many have working parents and are picked up by extended family members and/or babysitters. The children come to school excited and ready to learn. They all want to become better at math, reading, and writing. Many of my students have never been in a school environment so the structure is very new and a bit scary. My goal is to make each and every student successful in their learning.
My Project
Starting in September 2017, my students will get the opportunity to explore coding. Code.org is a non-profit dedicated to expanding access to computer science and increasing participation by girls, boys, and underrepresented minorities. The vision is for every student to have the opportunity to learn computer science, just like biology, chemistry, or algebra.
I am lucky enough to have a SmartBoard in my classroom but am unable to utilize it to its full potential.
A MacBook connected to the SmartBoard in the classroom will allow me to navigate and explore different ways to educate my students in a practical approach to computation. My students will learn sequencing, collaborating, as well as problem-solving strategies. With the help of the MacBook, my student can create video game characters and help design computer programs.
A MacBook is transportable so that programs can be shared with other classrooms.
