My students need (an Apple MacBook) - access to a computer with photo and video editing capabilities in order to edit and create videos with the latest technology available.
Like many schools, we have a hodge-podge of computers. We have slow ones, old ones, new ones, broken ones, ones that work for some projects but are too slow for others. Photo and video editing becomes frustrating and nearly impossible with our older computer systems.
I teach in an alternative school with students in grades K-12.
They are amazing individuals who, for a variety of reasons, choose an alternative school setting. Some students choose alternative education to help them with behavioral issues, some for assistance with anxiety issues, and some choose us because smaller classes work better for the way in which they learn. They tend to learn best with hands-on activities and when they are provided opportunities to explore.
My Project
If you have ever put together a slide show, edited a video, or created a design in a photo editing program, you are likely aware of the tedious amount of work that is involved in these areas. And, if you are like my students, you don't actually mind that it takes a lot of work because you thrive on creating. But imagine getting halfway through a project and having the computer freeze, erasing all of your work. Imagine finishing a project only to discover you are unable to share the video with others because the program you are using is not compatible with any current programs. With our new Macbook, students will no longer have to suffer through these issues.
Students will be able to use our new computer to create a variety of projects that will enhance their learning, prepare them for college and careers, and develop a stronger community with their peers through creating/viewing videos of school activities.
We are a small school and while it is only one computer, it is one awesome, full-loaded and functional computer. Also, because it is an Apple, and because the majority of my students have Iphones, transferring photos and videos to the computer workspace will be seamless.
With 10-12 students per class, it will be easy to set up pairs to work on photo and video editing projects. We already have an Apple TV, so students will be able to project their work product in real time.
