My Students
Engaging students in education is difficult so we need to teach more in less time than ever before. Lecturing in front of the classroom isn't effective. The use of technology allows us to engage students through a familiar medium. Technology has given us some amazing learning tools.
My 2nd grade classroom is comprised of 100% military dependents.
They are 7 and 8 years-old and are an amazing group of kids who attend school while their parents serve in Afghanistan, recover at the military hospital from their war-inflicted injuries, or complete their duty to our country. They love learning, have fun making everything into songs, and find pure joy in learning. They have a yearning for technology-rich lessons to engage and prepare them for success in life. In a technology-driven world that can often be out of reach for the military families, students enjoy being introduced and engaged in lessons that extend their minds, grasp their imaginations, and fill them with hope. They are committed to working hard and I am committed to engaging them in that learning and complementing their hard work through exciting lessons.
My Project
Apple has created a revolutionary device with the iPad. Although the expense has kept us to one iPad for the entire class, devices such as the Apple TV allows us to take that one iPad and reach 22 students at the same time. By having this device connected to my projector in my classroom I will have the ability to turn our one piece of advanced technology into a learning opportunity for the entire class. Many students zone out adult voices, but they zone into television. Currently, we use a projector and a desktop computer which is great for the content but difficult for me to move around and make sure that the students are comprehending the lesson. This is where the Apple TV would come in. I could not only show what is on my iPad, but have students with questions interact with the iPad as I walk around. The Apple TV I am requesting will help engage students in interacting with what they are learning.
This request is simply about taking a device that has such a profound learning impact for one student and giving it the ability to impact an entire class.
To see the students light up at the opportunity to learn as a class from such a creative device, rather than individually, will change the way we learn in my classroom forever.
