Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am an ESE (Special Education)/Reading teacher at a middle school in Miami. I teach and support students who have Emotional/Behavior Disorders and learning difficulties. My school is a Title I school, which means that about 99% of the students at my school receive free or reduced-price lunch due to their low socioeconomic status. The school is in a high-poverty neighborhood so many of my students come from families that struggle financially. As a result, my students endure more problems than average children, and these problems interfere with and hinder their learning.
My Project
I am currently using my desktop at the school to deliver my instruction. The computer is so outdated that it loses connection, freezes, and asks for administration permission to download certain apps that I need, to which I do not have access. With a Mac Book Pro, I will be able to not only have a reliable device, but I will also be able to move around the class with the laptop without having to be confined to my desk waiting countless minutes for it to load or decide to work. My students learn by watching videos, attending virtual field trips, and using technology. Before I assign any assignments for them to complete I must first model it to them. Most of the week we are working on social/emotional assignments because their well-being comes first. I have to reach their mental health before I can expect academic excellence.
My students are really trying hard to learn and it is so difficult when the teacher can not effectively deliver the instruction.
Not to mention the anxious students that are at home waiting to be connected to the teacher not realizing that it's not the teacher lagging but it is the computer. I continue to keep a straight face while dealing with the frustrations of programs/apps not downloading and freezing. I believe an apple a day will take our troubles away.
