This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

These are a few of the dreams of my eighth grade students.

These kids are from a high-need community in Northern California, and they are in a special education class for students with learning disabilities. Our school faces many challenges including a lack of resources, rundown equipment, and being located in a community plagued by violence. My students also have the additional challenge of having learning disabilities, which means that learning can sometimes be a struggle for them.

My Project

Despite everything, these students are motivated to work hard and they have big dreams for the future. Our class focus this year is to prepare for high school and college, and my students' hard work is leading to huge gains in their reading and math levels, even with limited resources. We could go so much further with your help! My class would greatly benefit from a headset microphone and a computer tablet and pen. The headset microphone would be used during direct instruction to help my students with auditory processing disorders more clearly hear what is being said by the teacher. The tablet and pen would be used during PowerPoint presentations to visually demonstrate the material being taught. As a unique group of learners, these students remember material best when they are presented with the information in multiple ways. A tablet would allow us to use large visuals and pictures in each lesson, as well as have math and science problems demonstrated on a projector.

Your help will make it possible for my students to make dramatic gains in their learning this year and reach their big goals.
