My Students

My students are studying Reading and Writing in grades 4-5. At Lab, we empower our students with the skills and mindset they need to grow into the thinkers, creators and innovators of tomorrow. Our school intentionally mirrors the economic and diverse make-up of the city of Charlotte. My students love exploring new ideas and forms of expression both similar to and different from their own cultures and experiences.

My Project

The goal of our project is to have a classroom library with diverse representation of authors, prominent/historical figures related to content area and/or fictional characters in literature across a range of categories. We are excited to expand our classroom library to add books that are both developmentally appropriate, culturally representative and relevant to 4th graders.

An extensive classroom library with diverse representation will foster an environment that enriches the learning experience for ALL children and better prepares students for a global future.

Diverse representation in literature will give my students enhanced access to books with characters, authors and important figures who look like them as well as those who have different cultures and backgrounds. It will also promote the celebration and understanding of multiple viewpoints.
