My Students

My students are creative, thoughtful, and full of questions!

They come to school each day ready to try new things and take brave chances in order to grow both personally and academically.

They always want to improve and push themselves. Truly, they are my inspiration!

My Project

Imagine students scattered around the classroom; some lying on their bellies, some snuggled into a comfy chair, some hunched over the pages of amazing books while they read. In our class, you will see all of these and more. My students love to read. We read in many configurations, independently, with a partner or small group and whole class. The power of a shared reading experience to anchor our conversations and learning is deeply valued in our room.

Among the Hidden is a text that the whole class will read.

Margaret Peterson Haddix is a wonderfully gifted author that many 4th graders have not spent the time to get to know. So, I introduced them. We read about Mrs. Haddix's life and the inspirations for her stories via her biography on her website. This leads us to the discovery of book one in The Shadow Children series. We had already studied the structure of the US government, basic rights, and how to be a politically active citizen. As we read the pages of Among the Hidden, my students will question the reasoning of the government in the book. They cheer for the main character as his worldview expanded in daring and unimaginable ways.

As we read, students will leave sticky notes of their thinking and mine for lines of text to support the ideas forming in their heads as they challenged the possibility of a world such as the one they were reading. Each student will have an Among the Hidden journal where they chronicle the growth of the characters and merge their thinking with the text.
