My Students
The writers I teach impress me everyday. They have a strong work ethic and strive for excellence in all that they do, meeting challenges both academic and personal with great character.
Over ninety percent of my students are Hmong American, and many struggle with English language proficiency.
You can imagine the challenges that a composition course presents. Grammar rules that native English speakers simply absorbed as small children must be kept at the front of my students' minds as they attempt mastery of rhetoric. All this, and they're still eager to improve their academic writing. Your donation will help me honor this strong work ethic.
My Project
As AP English Language & Composition students are encouraged to engage with diverse viewpoints, I've developed an American Perspectives unit that seeks to introduce students to the lives of U.S. citizens that the media tends to discuss less often.
Students will choose from a diversity of nonfiction texts and meet regularly to discuss the context and exigence of the book before examining the rhetorical choices each author makes toward achieving a given purpose.
This independent reading unit will provide meaningful preparation for the AP exam while offering research-supported student choice that seeks to provide autonomy for students to drive their learning.
