it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This novel, American Dirt, portrays the journey of a mother and son as they escape violence in Mexico and navigate their way to the United States. So many of my students will relate to this novel as immigrants whose lives are complicated by having their loved ones near and far. However, there is nuance in the reading of this novel; it is written by a white woman who has not experienced this journey herself.
There is such richness in both the reading of this book and also the reflection on who gets to tell one's story.
This book will be taught paired with an additional novel, Infinite Country. Students will research, journal, interview and debate. This novel, American Dirt, will provide a launching pad for great inquiry.
