Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach students in grades 6, 7, and 8 in mathematics. Many of my students deal with challenges of being part of a low income-household, and are unable to access tools that they need to help them succeed. Another challenge that they face is a language barrier: most of them come from non-English speaking households.
Even with these challenges, my students are enthusiastic, determined, and excited to learn!
They come into my classroom every day, prepared, and ready to get to work. They are inquisitive and want to know the whys behind every calculation and the purposes of them. They love to be able to apply concepts were learning to real-world scenarios. They are excited when something finally clicks!
My ELL students are working towards developing fluency within the English language and grow each and every day learning new math vocabulary words. They even love being able to decipher new words in our math storybooks and creating their own math problems!
They are fearless when it comes to technology and as children of the 21st century, they need to be prepared to use a variety of tools to engage their world.
My Project
Whiteboard spaces allow a student to be able to be creative, and strategic about problem-solving. During our classwork times, we split into groups to work together on our problems, in which they would share paper to show and explain to each other how problems are solved.
Whiteboards give students the freedom to make mistakes but learn how to improve them.
Learning in my classroom is all about learning from mistakes to become fluent and build confidence. These tables would be available to each team to use as they work together, and during test times instead of wasting paper writing answers out, we can use our tables effectively!
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
