Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My class is an Extensive Support Needs Self Contained Class. My students have been identified as having intellectual disabilities, Autism, Down Syndrome, Speech and Language delay, and some are considered medically fragile.
My students enjoy listening to stories each day as part of their routine.
However, due to only a few books in the classroom, their opportunity to choose, read, and enjoy different books is limited. The students and I wish we have a more extensive classroom library where they can choose from different books of their interest.
My Project
In my classroom, the book shelf is utilized during free time, at the end of the day, or throughout the day with adult permission. Students are always allowed to read any book in the classroom that they want to read, but if the book comes off of the bookshelf they need to practice their communication and ask.
A classroom library for students with special needs provides a great opportunity to motivate them to read, build their confidence in reading, and encourage them to keep reading.
Guided and independent reading is an important part of their daily routine. This encourages them to look at pictures, engage in communication, and develop their reading comprehension skills. It also promotes student engagement as books of their interest are read one at a time, making sure that each of them will have a turn to pick a book. It would be better if there are more books to choose from rather than a few books being read over and again. Because we only have a few books in the classroom, students often pick the same book that they are already familiar with. Thus, creating a more predictable reading, which in turn, does not promote much engagement and learning.
