“My contention is that creativity now is as important in education as literacy, and we should treat it with the same status.”~ Sir Ken Robinson. Our elementary public school is full of excited little people who can't wait to create. We are always looking for new and exciting ways to keep their creativity challenged and stimulated. This project will also help students focus on giving with their art since they will make their pendant jewelry with a lucky recipient in mind.
My Project
My students will be exploring jewelry-making as they create pendants from clay and beads to give to someone they love. Students will add texture and a hole to their clay then learn about the stages of working with clay: greenware, bisque ware, and glazing.
This grant will provide the materials to complete the final look of the project with cords, clasps, and beads to string up the pendant into a piece of jewelry.
Finally, students will be asked to prepare an artist statement about their pendant and its future recipient. As students work on their jewelry they need to think about the preferences of the person who will receive the pendant and allow this information to guide their artistic choices.
