I have the joy of working as the librarian at a school that only works with students ages three to twenty-one with severe/profound intellectual disabilities. Many of the students also have other disabilities including vision and other physical challenges. I work with all 145 students.
The motto at our school is "Those You Think Cannot.... Can!" and that is something that the students show us every day.
They are some of the most amazing students that you will ever meet.
My Project
Every year South Carolina chooses twenty picture books as their book award nominees. These are a combination of fiction and nonfiction book of a range of topics.
One of my students' favorite things in library every year is to vote on the South Carolina Award Picture books.
We read each book during their library time and then the students vote on whether or not they liked it using a voice output device. We then graph their answers.
Voting on the South Carolina Picture Book Award nominees gives them the opportunity to participate in deciding who the winner will be for our state. These books are the South Carolina Picture Book Award nominees for the 2017-2018 school year.
