Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am currently a Seventh Grade Departmental Language Arts teacher in a Chicago Public School on the Southwest side of Chicago. Our school provides an education for students in prekindergarten - eighth grade. Four of my twenty-six students are special education students and many are bilingual students with limited English speaking skills. My school has a poverty rate of 90.4% and these families qualify for free or reduced - price lunches. Many of my students begin the school year as new students to the school, thrown into an environment with other students they know nothing about. The population of these students has also changed. The obstacle that I face in my classroom is not having an adequate collection of books to compliment the diverse needs of each of my students. Books become a powerful tool when readers are completely hooked on what they are reading. Reading provides students with many opportunities to think critically and analytically about what an author has to say to them. In my classroom, I want to create multiple experiences for my students to develop social skills and prevent misunderstandings of one another as individuals. In order to have a diverse literacy center based on this ideology, I must create a literacy center that honors, respects and acknowledges diversity, a center that is based on understanding different cultures. One way to accomplish this is having students read different novels that address the sometimes sensitive nature of diversity. I am, therefore, asking for multiple copies of Does My Head Look Big In This?, Keeping the Moon, That Summer, Emako Blue, Red Kayak, Airborn, Slam, Sami and the Time of the Troubles, Sitti's Secrets, The Day of Ahmed's Secret, The Table Where Rich People Sit, Aida, 145th Street, Summer School, My Side of the Mountain, Where the Red Ferns Grow, and Lotus Seed. My vision is that students are tolerant and understanding of each other's beliefs and are able to promote a school climate of trust and friendship within the classroom and also in society. As a donor you will be helping to promote peace in this classroom while enhancing my students reading and thinking skills. Please consider my proposal.
