This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Once young children see a work of art they immediately want to try it out themselves. I want to give the children in our grade that opportunity when they see clay sculptures in a museum.
Our Pre-K students are a diverse group of children in ethnicity and socioeconomic status.
Our school is located in the center of our city, situated next to a housing project that is surrounded by an upper middle class neighborhood. We are a Title One school. We draw our students from a larger area than the upper grades because we are the only public school Pre-K program within 1 mile. Our school has a museum theme. Our entire curriculum focuses on that theme.
My Project
Using the new Common Core standards and a curriculum we have authored, we make connections with the standards and museums or works of art. At the Early Childhood level it is best to accompany any curricular and museum experiences with a hands-on activity. This gives the children the opportunity to come to an understanding not just through auditory and visual process but through a tactual modality too. The clay provides an opportunity to use fine motor skills and develop hand strength. The clay is also another art medium that the children will learn about and develop an understanding of as they approach other works of art that may or may not be made out of clay.
Our Pre-K students will develop an understanding of what clay is and how it works, as well as, why an artist may choose to use it as his/her medium.
They will have the opportunity to express themselves in their art and their artistic aesthetic. Our students will be able to connect to art on a physical level just through their fine motor work with clay.
