This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Reigning in 7 big personalities on a daily basis is tough, especially when school and learning is a challenge because of their learning disabilities. Engagement is always the hardest part but luckily we've gotten to a point where they want to learn and my duty is to foster and nurture that desire.
My students are part of the Special Day Program at our school where they receive instruction separate from their peers.
Each and every one of them has a big personality that has allowed us to develop a strong community. Although our school is located in a tough area of South Los Angeles, they each come to school believing that we think they are scholars. Slowly but surely they have gained confidence in their skills and 85% of them are now on the Honor Roll. This year and all of the experiences that come with it are pivotal in setting them up for success. All of them have at one point said that they enjoy coming to school and for students who struggle with academics that is a sign of success and changing mindsets.
My Project
I am requesting 7 copies of "Always Running" and 1 audio copy. The novels will be given to my students to annotate and follow along during our daily readings. For all of my students, this will be their first novel and after reading excerpts of it they are all excited about engaging with a text that they can relate to and is rigorous. When we engage with this text we will be analyzing literary devices, supporting opinions with evidence, crafting poems, and creating artistic representations of the characters. Our students have learning disabilities that make accessing material difficult, which is why we will benefit from having the audio of the novel. This will allow for students to listen to the novel and not be discouraged by their inability to read each word with automaticity. Moreover, it will help them immerse themselves into the text and find within it connections in an enjoyable manner.
This donation will help to reinforce the importance of reading and how there is a book for everyone.
My students very rarely read books with protagonists that look like them or with characters that share similar experiences. I know that this donation will help foster critical discussions and activities for creative expression. My students will be able to say that they've read and analyzed a text that they once believed was "too hard" for them. It'll be their proof of scholarship.
