Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach at a Title I school. Many students get free or reduced-price lunches. My students bring enthusiasm, a positive attitude, and curiosity to class every day. Our campus has a strong sense of community; we really are a family. Many of my students participate in extracurricular activities like athletics or clubs. I currently advise the garden and environmental clubs at my school.
My biology students will be dissecting an earthworm, a grasshopper, a frog or dogfish shark, and a rat.
At my school, I always give students different options if they do not want to dissect the specimens. This year I have a handful of students that want an alternative to dissection. With the Teacher Pay Teachers gift card, I can purchase paper models of the specimens. Students can then color code them, learn about the organs, and various body systems, and glue the pieces together to make a paper model. This is a great way for students to still meet the learning goals of our comparative anatomy unit. In addition, the frog model will be used as a check for understanding to identify and put organs together. Some of my students with special needs will find the paper alternatives helpful in addition to also participating in the dissections. Using the paper models will also promote sustainability as we are not discarding and wasting actual specimens. I try to make sure there are different modes of learning and support for the diverse group of students and levels that I teach.
My environmental science students are propagating their indoor houseplants. We have been growing them all year from the same mother plant to learn about sustainability, tropical plants, and how different plants are adapted to different conditions. We need the additional supplies for transplanting and propagation.
