I have taught in the same school for my entire career. This place is my family, and I can't imagine teaching anywhere else. Many of the students I have this year are connected to previous students, and I love the relationships we have built throughout the years.
This year my students are very unique, and it has been a challenge for me to meet their needs.
I have looked for ways to incorporate more character building, self esteem enhancing, and conflict resolution than I have ever needed.
I've always had a big heart, and my emotions often are shown to my students. They know how much they mean to me, and they also know how much I want them to grow into responsible, caring adults. We've come a long way in less than 6 months, and I know they will continue to surprise me!
My Project
When I am home grading papers, making lesson plans, or even reading, I know I work best when I am most comfortable! And that has been the reasoning behind my experiment with alternative seating.
Why should my students be limited to traditional chairs and seating?
I started this journey in January, and tested the waters by removing some table legs, raising table legs, and bringing in seating I had at home. My students immediately benefited from the choice they were given to find what works best for them. Some prefer to lay on the floor on a bean bag and use a clipboard to write on. Others like to sit taller on a stool.
I have seen huge improvement in their ability to focus and complete tasks. They also enjoy having their own comfortable space. I am now ready to increase the number of options for them, since I have seen first hand the benefits of this idea!
