I teach all of the subjects in my fourth and fifth grade classroom. I have 30 amazing students in my class. They are very excited and engaged in their learning.
My class is made up of 30 fourth and fifth graders who speak 12 different languages at home, come from various backgrounds, and who are all eager and energetic to learn.
Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over 75% of our students receiving free lunch. Our school is also one of the most ethnically diverse schools in Portland. Students speak a multitude of languages including English, Spanish, Hindi, Urdu, Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Arabic. As diverse as our students are economically and culturally, they are diverse in their academics.
My Project
These various alternative chairs and balance balls would allow my students to move flexibly around the classroom instead of sitting in their seats all day. When students are given a choice of where to sit that is comfortable, they are more engaged! The inflatable cushions would be especially helpful for my students with ADHD that need movement constantly. Instead of trying to wiggle in their chair (and sometimes falling off!), these students can sit on the cushions and move back and forth without being distracting.
These ball seats, wobble cushions, couch and floor table will help to meet the different learning styles of all students in my classroom!
Students love having a choice. It makes them feel empowered. And when they feel empowered, the results are overwhelmingly positive. I am beyond excited to see the results of this alternative classroom set-up!
