My Students
My students are elementary school students in a special education classroom with disabilities such as autism, ADHD and sensory processing disorder. They face many challenges during each school day. My students are resilient and always try to participate to the best of their abilities.
I strive to find ways that my students can be successful throughout their day, while promoting their independence and building their self-esteem.
My students inspire me everyday as they work to overcome the obstacles facing them.
My Project
Many of the students that I work that have disabilities such as ADHD or Autism have a difficult time meeting the demands of school that require them to sit and attend to school tasks. They seek out movement and varied sensory experiences, and the environment at school often does not provide them with the sensory input that they need.
Alternative seating in the classroom is a great solution to provide movement and sensory input while students stay on task and in their seat.
It improves their attention and enables them to learn effectively. This is a creative and easy modification that can be made to the classroom in order to make it an inclusive learning environment for all students.
My students need a variety of seating options such as yoga balls, stools, wiggle cushions and floor rockers in order to give them individualized seating alternatives to a traditional desk and chair. The alternative seating options will help increase their attention to learning and decrease the amount of time the student leaves their seat. This project project addresses all areas of the Utah Core curriculum, as it empowers students to learn.
These alternative seating options are extremely durable, can be used from year to year and are applicable for all preschool and elementary school students. This project will benefit a lot of students and is a simple change to make to the classroom environment to make it more engaging for all learners.
