I service many disabled and economically challenged students who don’t always have consistent access to food, beds, a clean living environment, or books. More than 75% of our students receive free lunch, 100% of our students are offered free breakfast and snack, every day, and we are a Title I school. Although these economic stressors are often a factor in their delayed cognitive and emotional development, these students persevere, bringing limitless joy and energy to our school. I’d like to give back to my students by providing a content rich and comfortable place to call “speech therapy.”
My Project
I service over 40 different students in our district with disabilities that involve sensory needs. These disabilities include Autism, Down Syndrome, and ADHD, to name only a few.
Many of these students would benefit from alternative seating options during their speech therapy sessions such as comfortable floor seating, which these cushions would provide.
This seating would offer increased attention span, opportunity to engage their core, and a comfortable way to engage in literacy activities.
I imagine my speech therapy room to be as inviting and accommodating to each of my many students' individual needs as possible. By helping to fund something as simple as comfortable seating for our room, you're helping to grant accessibility and a sense of welcome to a group of students who need it the most.
