Help me give my students alternative seating for those with special needs and hands-on math materials needed to do well in Special Education and General Education Co-Taught Math Classes.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach special education 7th-grade resource classes and I co-teach with a general education math teacher, including multiple students in our co-taught classes who have special needs. Our students require hands-on math materials and alternative seating in order to do well. They also need help learning to use the specific calculator allowed to be used on the state math tests.
The students who come to my resource room often require more movement in order to focus on their learning.
The alternative seating arrangements with the Can Do Ball Chairs allow them to use their core muscles while sitting, enjoy a more comfortable cushion, and roll a bit if necessary in order to stay focused on their math. During state testing, having these alternative seats available can help many of our students with special needs to do their best on state assessments.
The use of individual dry-erase boards that incorporate a quadrant graph on one side will increase the students' understanding of graphing, proportion, and ratios. Being able to create and erase errors will help the students feel good about themselves because an error is only a temporary setback. These materials will solve our dilemma.
