Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Simple circuits don't cut it any more. If we're going to educate our students to be knowledgeable about 21st Century energy choices, we need to teach them more about energy than simply how to make a circuit with a battery, light bulb and wire. These excellent kits will help us do just that!

I teach science and 3rd grade in an elementary school in rural North Carolina.

Our student body is 85% Hispanic, and over 95% of our students meet federal standards for free and reduced lunch, which is an indicator of extreme poverty. But despite the challenges of learning English and coming from poverty, our students arrive at school each day visibly excited by the chance to learn from their teachers and make a better future for themselves. I wish that all of the people who complain so loudly about immigration issues could spend a day in our school, watching our children. They would see a school full of children who are eager to please their teachers and who value nothing more than learning everything that we can teach them. I believe that one of my jobs as a teacher is to provide these wonderful children with the resources and experiences necessary to become valuable contributors to society.

My Project

In an age when countries will prosper or suffer according to their future energy choices, it is imperative that we teach children about alternative and renewable energy resources at a young age. This generation will be critical to our country's future -- they must be able to make knowledgeable choices about their energy usage. Moreover, they will be relied upon to contribute to the development of even more efficient technologies in the future. These excellent (and relatively inexpensive) kits allow students to conduct hands-on investigations using mechanical, chemical, wind, and solar generated electricity. Using the kits, even elementary-aged students are able to compare the costs and benefits of various energy-producing technologies. Students will begin to understand the range of energy choices before us, and will be able to understand how each energy technology can contribute to our society's needs.

Students will use these kits to develop a deeper understanding of various energy technologies, while also exploring the social issues surrounding energy.

A comprehensive curriculum involving the integration of science, social studies and language arts will require students to apply their best critical thinking skills to understanding the issues surrounding energy production, usage and dependence.
