Alternative Energy Becomes a Reality

My students need 4 wind power kits, 2 solar ovens, and two Alternative Energy for Dummies books.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Sviben's classroom raised $481

This project is fully funded

We are a small neighborhood Charter School. We only have two classes per grade-level for a total of 196 students. We pride ourselves on focusing on the individual student and offering exciting learning opportunities! We try to give students as much exposure to the sciences as possible. Science is our future! We are trying to make students aware of their impact on the environment and how they can help by showing them alternatives to what they know.

Our school has been trying to teach students the value of going green. The students have gotten so excited to participate and have come up with many ideas of how we can help as a school. A good portion of our efforts has gone toward recycling items from lunch, including plastic bottles, drink pouches and chip bags. We are sending them to a company that is creating items out of the recycled materials. The students were excited to see the results of their efforts and it encouraged them to continue on.

I would like to broaden the scope of "going green" and show students how others are working to save our resources. We recently visited the Florida Solar Energy Center, which gave student a good idea of what alternative energies exist and how they are used in buildings. This trip made students so excited about the idea of solar energy that I would like to reinforce that excitement and learning, and let them discover how it works for themselves! That is where the the solar ovens come in. Building and monitoring the ovens will help reinforce that solar is truly a renewable resource that we need to tap into. In addition, I would like to provide them with the hands-on opportunity of building a kit to transfer wind power into energy. This is a concept that they read about, but that would truly come to life for them given these kits. These resources will give students a hands-on experience to show that by using alternatives, we can lessen our impact on the environment. Until they get the chance to put together their own system, the idea of solar energy and wind power are something they have only heard of. The kits gives the students a way to make alternative energy come alive.

These kits will be a wonderful way to reinforce key concepts that have been learned in our curriculum and on our field trip. This kit will be available to students this year and in the future! Your support will help our school go green and become more conscious of how our actions affect the earth.
