I serve K-2 intervention students who struggle with reading and writing skills. My students are usually at least one grade level behind their peers in reading. I pull students from their classrooms for 45 minutes each school day to receive interventions in a small group setting to work on phonological awareness and phonics skills. My students are very eager and willing to learn, and they are capable of reading and writing, but they need more practice than the average student.
I am requesting large and small alphabet letter construction sets and tactile foam sheets for sensory learning to help bring phonics instruction alive by using these hands-on manipulatives which will eventually help my students become successful readers.
Two of the alphabet STEM construction sets are large for modeling or for students who need a larger visual for learning the alphabet formation. Three are smaller alphabet construction kits with more shapes designed for using with more than one student. This will provide me with enough shapes for forming letters to use in my small intervention reading groups. These alphabet construction kits will help students see which letters have straight and/or curvy lines as they use the different shapes to form the letters. This will provide a fun STEM format for learning the alphabet.
The letter cards and glitter foam sheets are textured and will provide sensory learning by having students use their finger to write the letters and feel the letter shapes (straight/curvy lines) on the textured foam. These alphabet construction kits and tactile foam sheets will allow me to work on letter recognition and letter sounds with my small intervention groups.
These two hands-on manipulatives will help provide my K-2 intervention students with the alphabet knowledge they need to become successful readers which also leads to successful writers.
