Aloha! Help Bring Hawaii to Pennsylvania

My Students

Being a teacher in a rural town with high poverty, my students face a wide variety of challenges in school and at home. Because I'm their only music teacher from grades K-6, I love seeing my students learn and grow from year to year.

My students are hard working, they love to learn, and they're genuinely very cool kids!

Many of my students will never have the opportunity to travel outside of the area to see a variety of live music groups, or to be immersed in other cultures.

It is my hope that I can provide my students with a wide variety of musical experiences so they can experience music hands- (and ears)- on! It is through a variety of experiences that I can nurture a love and respect of music from all cultures, and continue to cultivate the pure joy of music within us all.

My Project

This project will put Ukuleles in the hands of all 200+ 5th and 6th grade students that I teach. My students deserve the world, and learning to play these ukuleles will help bring another part of the world to them!

Music helps us become better people; more respectful, more cultured, and fills us with pure joy.

Students will have the opportunity to learn about a culture different from their own, hear the music, and also learn to play the music, deepening their appreciation for a world outside of their own. Many of my students do not have access to experiences such as this, and receiving these instruments would be a great addition to our curriculum.

In addition to learning traditional Hawaiian music, students will be using these instruments to learn to play other traditional American folk songs, songs from the radio that they know and love, and songs from around the world.

The Waterman Ukuleles by Kala have a great sound quality and are are durable enough for daily use.
