My Students

My classroom is a co-taught ninth grade English classroom. It is an inclusion classroom, so many of my students need extra scaffolding and support in and out of the classroom.

While poverty certainly plays a role in their views of their education, I am trying to help change my students' mindsets!

My school of approximately 2000 students is in a poverty stricken community. Ensuring my ninth graders have the basics they need to support their learning and achieve literacy goals will be a key factor in breaking the cycles poverty often holds.

My Project

My students are doing great at behaving in class and attempting to learn material, but many are distracted by basic hygiene needs. Your donations to this project will allow me to supply my students with the essentials they need, without them having to miss valuable classroom time to visit the nurse or social worker.

I am so excited about the idea of preparing a place in my classroom where students can stop and grab what they need, whether that be tampons, deodorant, a comb for their hair, or something else.

For many of them, just knowing that they can get the supplies for their basic hygiene needs from someone they are comfortable with, rather than having to go ask the nurse, will help them feel safer to even come to school.
