My Project

Since becoming an educator, even before that, I’ve always felt a deep sense of purpose to help children. I’ve been fortunate to fulfill one of those dreams as a teacher. However, despite my best efforts, I’ve not been able to make one dream a reality. This fall marks my 11th year as an educator! A Care Closet is a dream that has unfortunately been outside of my budget and can't afford to bring to life on my own.

With that in mind, my dream is to establish a care closet right inside our classroom, the safe space where we create our little family each year!

Every school year, I have at minimum three to five children who come to school without their basic needs being met. My school does have a great area with items for children who need them, but they’re all used items (which is perfectly fine; I love thrifting myself). However, to a child, having something brand new that’s just theirs is a special privilege. The joy of removing the tags from your brand new pair of shoes or socks is something that not all of my students get to experience.

Every year I have students that are wearing the same shirt and pants all week, and it was always very noticeably unwashed. The same stains and caked-on food that they had on Monday were still there on Friday. As for socks those were almost alway nonexistent or were filled with holes. Providing shoes would be a dream as well as there have been many times I've duct taped shoes back together.
