This project is fully funded

I teach Science to K-5 in a low-income urban school in Illinois. 98% of the students at this school qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Our school was built to relieve overcrowding at nearby low achieving schools. Because of their previous poor education, students have not had access to scientific technology; incorporating the technology into the lessons is a priority in our curriculum.

In our study of electricity, students were exposed to the different kinds and sizes of batteries, and the question arose as to WHY there are so many different kinds and HOW they were different. We came up with a lot of ideas about why but had no way to investigate how.

We have a class set of Macintosh laptops, and the Vernier software for using probes. The voltage probes that we are requesting will allow us to measure the voltage of various batteries and learn if the size of the battery makes a difference in how long a flashlight stays on. Using the Vernier software students working in small groups will design and conduct an experiment and produce a graph with their findings.

The importance of hands-on science cannot be stressed enough, and finding out about real-life issues makes students feel an ownership with the experiment. This activity will involve hypothesizing, collecting data, and analyzing that data, all part of the scientific process. It also brings our children a step closer to understanding the technology available for learning. Thank you for opening that door.
