My Students

I teach first grade at an elementary school in South Philadelphia. My students enter the classroom each day excited to learn how to read, write, and for most-- speak English. They each have a heart of gold paired with motivation and determination to be the best that they can be.

Our school population is 100% economically disadvantaged and 40% English language learners.

Our students come from all over the world including Nepal, Vietnam, China, Thailand, Pakistan, Cambodia, Mexico, Malaysia, Uganda, Kenya, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Laos, and of course South Philadelphia. Our school provides a nurturing environment for students, staff, and families to enrich them academically and grow as positive social contributors in our world. Our parents are extremely supportive and involved in their child's education, although many of them do not speak English. We use extensive resources to communicate with our parents in their native language. Our parents and students aspire to succeed and achieve their goal of living the American Dream. Due to the School District of Philadelphia's financial crisis, ALL of our educational supplies, resources, and materials are either limited or non-existent.

My Project

I will be moving into an entirely different classroom for the upcoming school year. One of my goals from last year was to become as organized as possible in the classroom to create an environment where students know the expectations and can contribute to seamless organization. Being organized, provides a sense of comfort, belonging and safety in the classroom.

Having color coded book bins will aid in having the necessary components of a literacy rich environment.

I will use the bins as an independent leveled library where students can choose books according to their reading level. I will also have another themed library according to genre for use during daily 5 and teacher read alouds.
