My Students

Do you remember getting magazines that were "just right"? Do you remember getting mail? I want my eager first graders to have the opportunity to get "just right" mail on a regular basis.

My students are the face of the United States of America.

Some have been born in this country to English speaking parents. Some have been in born in the United States to Spanish or Vietnamese speaking parents. Others have been born in another country and immigrated to the United States. One thing that all of my students have in common is their zest for learning. They are so wonderful in that they don't see the differences between themselves. Mutual acceptance abounds at our school. A large percentage of these wonderful students come to school to learn in English. They then go home and speak another language. Think about the responsibility of having to work on homework in English and in school, then go home and communicate with parents and grandparents in the family language. Their resiliency astounds me at times.

My Project

I am requesting 25 copies of Scholastic News magazine for my students. Think of the bright eyes of my students as they receive their very own "magazine" to read and then take home to share with their families. An age-appropriate magazine is something I have a fond memory of from my school days. I want to have my students have fond memories of school.

Having a tangible magazine to read is becoming rare in our electronic age.

Many of my students don't have magazines delivered to their houses. Once we have read each issue in class, the students can then take them home and share them with their families. This will strengthen reading skills. Many of these magazines have captions with the pictures and students will be learning another important skill with ease.
