Every time my kids see me in the hallway, they run over excitedly and ask, "What are we doing today?"
My students come from the absolute worst of circumstances.
Most of them live in the projects or homeless shelters. Many have parents in prison, or are being raised by relatives or family friends. School is often the only place where they can feel safe.
My Project
I've envisioned several projects for my kids using these supplies. With oil pastels, we'll be creating a figure in the Cubist style. With hard and soft pencils, we'll learn shading and create an architectural style drawing, either part of a building or a room. Ink will give us the opportunity to further our study of shading. Using small cups, we'll dilute ink to various shades of gray and create monochromatic drawings.
My students have so little.
With each new project, and with each new medium, I can get them further along in the study of art. While all of my kids enjoy their projects, some are truly, exceptionally talented. Without help, I'd never be able to give them the opportunities to test out these different supplies in order to put together the portfolio that I'm sure they are talented enough to create.
