Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach at a low-income, Title I school in Southeast LA. Almost all of my students are low-income, many are unhoused or foster youth, and many are English Language Learners.
As a mild/moderate Special Education teacher, I teach students who are more than capable of succeeding in a rigorous math class.
However, they have learning differences and they need extra support. Due to recent phone bans in LAUSD, some of their accommodations can no longer be provided. The tablets will allow students to take pictures of any color-coded work and steps that we do together, and then send them to themselves. This will provide them with notes and examples to use when they are studying and working at home.
Aside from teaching students with learning differences, I also teach students who do not speak English. Because our classes are taught predominantly in English and I do not speak adequate Spanish, I am looking to support my Spanish-speaking students. They can no longer use their phones for translation services, so I am looking for a real-time two-way translator that they can use throughout class. This will allow my students to access the curriculum and not fall behind. No student deserves to be denied an education, simply due to a language barrier.
The tablets will support my students with disabilities, and the translators will support my Spanish-speaking students. Thank you so much for your support.
