My Students
What is so attractive about my students is their connection to the community and the world. They are amazing! Even though our school has no windows and was built in 1974, our students have eyes and minds which are open beyond our concrete walls. On any given day, they thirst for discussion and solutions to help us unite globally with resilience and persistence.
Particularly as part of our approach to mathematics, I teach them to reason and construct viable arguments.
This is naturally based on data which they are encouraged to systematically present. Their enthusiasm to be articulate, creative problem solvers is evident by their curiosity, collaborative work, and digital literacy. If I had to use a single word to describe them, without hesitation, they are so "eager." It's beautiful!
My Project
Whether it's creating a linear model from their collected data, demonstrating projectile motion using a quadratic function, or examining the forces of nature to model growth and decay exponentially, the learning curve is far superior when my students are able to demonstrate what they've discovered.
The use of an IPad and Pencil in the classroom will enable them to be mobile while writing, drawing, and speaking their solutions which they will present to their peers and project on a screen.
This is exactly the type of practice that helps prepare them as effective communicators and problem solvers. Currently we have no IPads or chrome books in our classroom and while I'd love to have one for all of them, I would be so appreciative for one to share. I'm confident my students will follow suit in showing their appreciation. Thank you.
