All-Star Kids Want to Know Who Was and What Was!

Help me give my students a 24 book set of biography books from the "Who Was/Is...?" series and a 10 book set of non-fiction books from the "What Was/Is...?" series.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Trudnowski's classroom raised $233

My Students

My very creative and enthusiastic class is called "The Second Grade All-Stars", because we love baseball. Our classroom has a baseball theme - our table groups are named after bases (1st base, 2nd base, etc.) and our class meeting area is called the "All-Star Dugout".

My All-Star 2nd grade students attend an amazing school right in the heart of the largest city in Washington State.

60% of my students speak two or more languages. My school is extremely unique, its design is called "open concept" because there are no walls between the classroom teaching spaces (just low bookshelves.) What makes this design so innovative is that it supports close collaboration and team teaching among the staff, and the students get to easily work with their classmates who are right next door in the neighboring classroom.

My Project

This year I have introduced my students to the "Who Was/Is...?" and "What Was/Is...?" popular series of nonfiction, informational chapter books! These books are about influential men, women, and places (from both the historical past and present day)!

My students have been fascinated with these "stories" ever since we read the book "Who Was Babe Ruth" - they are written in an entertaining yet informative way that motivates even the most reluctant reader!

The illustrations resemble those in old-fashioned comic books, and the text is written in "kid friendly" language. Each book has a timeline (learning how to use a timeline is a second grade standard), as well as other nonfiction text features (learning about text features is also a second grade standard) such as a sidebar, diagrams, table of contents, etc.

These books are also a wonderful way to integrate social studies and history into second grade reading and writing.

Currently, our classroom library only has 6 of the books from the "Who Was/Is...?" series, and our school library only has about 10 of the titles. Having 34 of the books from this series (24 from one set and 10 from another set) in our classroom library will enable every student in the class to have one that they can put in their Book Box to read and enjoy each week!
