My Students

My very creative and enthusiastic class is called "The Second Grade All-Stars", because we love baseball. Our classroom has a baseball theme - our table groups are named after bases (1st base, 2nd base, etc.) and our class meeting area is called the "All-Star Dugout".

My All-Star 2nd grade students attend an amazing school right in the heart of the largest city in Washington State.

60% of my students speak two or more languages.

My school is extremely unique... Its design is called "open concept" because there are no walls between the classroom teaching spaces (just low bookshelves.) What makes this design so innovative is that it supports close collaboration and team teaching among the staff, and the students get to easily work with their classmates who are right next door in the neighboring classroom.

My Project

My school district has recently announced that students will be "remote learning" from home this fall due to the Covid pandemic. Each student will be given a tablet by the district to use for remote instruction.

Having taught remotely from home this past spring, one thing became very clear: My students who wore headphones during remote learning instruction had an easier time of focusing and were much less distracted by background noises at their homes.

I'm requesting "over the head" headphones (instead of ear buds) as 7 and 8 year old children have a much easier time keeping them on their ears.

I am also in the process of making Distance Learning Toolkits for each student in my class. My students will have a mini whiteboard and dry erase markers to use during instruction, but they need whiteboard erasers, as we will be writing on and erasing the whiteboards multiple times during a remote learning lesson.

Math manipulative materials will be a key component of the Distance Learning Toolkits. Addition and subtraction fact fluency is a key component of the second grade math standards. Fact fluency (knowing math facts from memory) is a big focus during the first three months of the school year. My students will need addition and subtraction flash cards for independent practice at home.
