All-Star Action News Club

My Project

I am a teacher co-leading ASB at our school. Our fifth-grade ASB students (about 15 of them) create a news broadcast every week for the whole school to watch every Friday morning. We aired our very first broadcast last September 2024 and just finished our eleventh broadcast as of mid-January 2025. The news has become very popular among our students, staff, and families, and has done wonders to build community around our school.

While anchoring or reporting the news, the students have experienced significant growth in their leadership skills, public-speaking skills, and in learning how to take on more responsibility.

During the first eleven broadcasts, the fifth graders have mainly been anchoring or reporting in the news while I have been filming and editing. I believe they are now ready to take on more responsibility and learn new skills. I would like to begin teaching them how to do the filming and editing of the news themselves. I believe this would continue to teach them valuable skills for their futures. Our club currently has one iPad and a set of microphones that we use to produce the news. We are seeking a second iPad for our club to open more opportunity throughout the week for the students to film, edit, and learn.
